Colonel Howard E. Selheimer

Colonel Howard “Howie” E. Selheimer, U.S. Air Force, Retired, of
Schertz, TX passed away April 10, 2005. Howard was born to George and Jane
Selheimer in Chester, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1941. He graduated from
Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University) with a degree in civil
engineering. After a brief stint in the U.S. Parks Service, he began his 28 year
Air Force career in 1963 as an airman and was commissioned after Officer
Training School in 1964. Later, he earned a Masters’ degree in Astronautics from
the Air Force Institute of Technology.
From missiles to weaponry research, the career he chose was distinguished and
encompassed exciting challenges, but the memories he treasured most were those
with the people of the civil engineering squadrons where he served and
commanded. Assignment locations included: Walker AFB, NM, Vietnam, Kirtland AFB,
NM, University of Missouri at Rolla, Iceland, Langley AFB, VA, RAF Upper Heyford,
UK, Lackland AFB, TX, Randolph AFB, TX and Sheppard AFB, TX.
His decorations include: The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Joint Commendation
Medal, AF Outstanding Unit award with five oak leaf clusters, AF Organizational
Excellence Award with one oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with four
bronze service stars, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.
His legendary quick wit was excelled only by his passion for sports,
particularly golf, where he achieved the ultimate “hole in one.” He will be
profoundly missed by his friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Selheimer of Schertz; son, Scott
Selheimer of Denver, CO; step-sons, Matthew Spencer & wife, Angel of San Antonio
and Shawn Spencer & wife, Pat of Crestview, FL; sister, Nancy Crossman &
husband, Dave of Brookhaven, PA and grandchildren, Preston and Jerrid Selheimer;
Kathryn, Christopher, Emily & Megan Spencer.
Funeral Services will be held at 9:15 AM on Friday, April 15, 2005 at Schertz
Funeral Home. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at Fort Sam
Houston National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Widener University,
